You know, it was not all that long ago that there were sexist ads in the media. Sure, there are still sexist ads in the media. However, they are not quite as common place as they once were. And it was not all that long ago that they were in fact common place.
For instance, check out this add for coffee below. I don’t even know what to say about it. And the spanking image – what is that all about?

Hillary Clinton has not shown a lot of emotion during her campaign. I suspect that it is because she is a woman that she has not done this. You know the stereotype that is out there.
That women are emotional.
And that is usually said in the tone that it is a bad thing. So I think that is why she is not showing much emotion. Yet the two times now that she has done it people on CNN say that it has helped her campaign.
I have to wonder if she is taking extra precautions to guard her emotions though because of this negative sterotype?

This presidential election is monumental. It marks the first time that a woman is running for president and is actually a viable candidate.
So the question has to be out there of if her gender really matters.
Apparently to the your voters it does not matter. A story on Yahoo points to young voters thinking that race is more monumental than gender in this election. Whereas older voters view gender as more monumental. At least for the most part that is true. Check out the article for the whole story.

Well, last night was another night of Democratic primaries.
There was a chance that Hillary was going to take Nebraska. She did not. Instead the people on CNN were saying that Obama actually cut into her base.
Is this a case of people just wanting to get behind a winning horse? Is it a case of people honestly thinking that he is the best candidate? Or is it a case of people wanting the man to win instead of the woman?

Should large conglomerates run websites aimed at adolescent girls? Especially if Cover Girl is one of the companies?
The website in question is beinggirl.com. It is a Web site aimed at adolescent girls and run by Procter & Gamble, Cover Girl’s parent company.
Currently, Tampax and Always seem to be the main sponsors of the site, which is not as disturbing as Cover Girl. What I do find disturbing is how a lot of the text on the page is written like a text message.

There is an interesting article in today’s Boston Globe on the ultimate glass ceiling and Hillary Clinton’s bid for presidency. The full article can be found here.
Hillary has worked long and hard. She has put in the hours to make her presidential material. Then we have Obama. He apparently thinks he can just skip all of the experience and leapfrog right into the presidency. And he just might.
Even though Hillary was long considered the frontrunner she appears to be hitting up against the ultimate glass ceiling. Will she be able to bust through it or will the unexperienced male candidate take what is hers?

I don’t have a problem with pornography. I don’t have a problem with Playboy and Hustler. I respect that they compensate women nicely for taking their clothes off.
I hate Girls Gone Wild. They pay in beads and t-shirts while they make millions.
There are no more grotesque, degrading, or advantage-taking media being churned out than these videos. Well, now apparently Girls Gone Wild has decided they are too cool not to also be in print media.

Is there gender discrimination when it comes to the workplace? And if so, can it be overcome with experience and education?
I think that my little resume experiment answers the question quite nicely. When I, as a potential candidate, appeared to be female I received only a few calls in regards to employment. And when I appeared to be male it was if my phone would not stop ringing.
So yes, there is still gender discrimination in the workplace. And no, a fancy pants degree and a resume chock-full of relevant experience is not enough to overcome the handicap of being female in a male’s world.

I changed my resume back to the real version of me and renewed my job hunting efforts. I only got interviewed for a few positions though. And two months later I finally got a job that required an MBA.
So, what have I learned? Well, when it comes to employers, more importance seems to be put on gender instead of education. In fact, the position that I am in now previously had a guy in it that did not have an MBA. He transferred to another office. Since him there have been two other women and one guy that have had this position. The women we both fired and the guy left on his own. They often talk around here about how they wish the two guys were still around.
The funny thing is that I have discovered numerous errors in the work that they have done.
