Women starting businesses

December 15th, 2008 admin

I have been reading a lot about the economy lately. Sure things are bad. But for people starting businesses things are good. That means this is a great time for women to get started with those business ideas! And working for yourself is a great way to make sure you do not get downsized or laid off! And hey, you can always start a part time biz while you are working a “real job.” And with the low start up cost of an online business it is pretty easy to get started. So, what are you waiting for?

Same-Sex Marriage Takes a Backseat in New York Senate Deal

December 5th, 2008 admin

Here is something interesting. A few days ago I was reading about how the same sex marriage issue was a hot one in New York. And in something I read it was suggested it would be the next state to pass it. But apparently not. I saw this on the Advocate site.

New York state senate Democrats may have secured control of their chamber by bargaining away marriage equality on Thursday.

Since Election Day, when Democrats won a two-seat majority in the chamber after decades of Republican rule, three conservative members of the caucus had threatened to defect to the GOP unless they received more power. But a handshake deal in New York City apparently gave the holdouts what they wanted, the New York Times reports. For one, senator Ruben Diaz Sr. of the Bronx, the concessions may have included postponing a vote on marriage equality until 2010 at the earliest, according to the paper.

New York assembly member Daniel J. O’Donnell, who is gay and carried a same-sex marriage bill that passed his chamber in 2007, told the Times that he expects momentum to continue for marriage equality regardless of what transpired. “All civil rights movements have moments where they move forward, and moments of perceived setbacks,” O’Donnell, who represents Manhattan, told the paper. “If in fact our civil rights were bargained away, that’s deplorable. But in the end, I think justice and fairness will prevail.”

Alan Van Capelle, head of Empire State Pride Agenda, said he and his team were awaiting more details about the deal. ”We would expect that any rumors that marriage equality was somehow a part of this deal are just that — rumors,” Van Capelle said in a statement. But, he cautioned, “civil rights should never be a bargaining chip in any political leadership battle, and we would be outraged if the issue of marriage equality was even part of the discussions.”

A same-sex marriage bill has yet to pass New York’s senate. (The Advocate)

Malaysia bans yoga and tomboys

November 25th, 2008 admin

File this one under ignorance and intolerance. Seems the Malaysian government has recently issued two bans. First they banned tomboys. They decided that girls who act like boys violate the tenets of Islam.

They also banned the practice of yoga. They claim it has elements of other religions that could corrupt Muslims. In fact, they claim that yoga involves not just physical exercise but also includes Hindu spiritual elements, chanting and worship.

Mmm turkey in NYC

November 19th, 2008 admin

I used to live in NYC. And that was how I had my first Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade experience. My thoughts? The balloons look way bigger on tv than they actually are. And there are tons of people out watching. So many that it is not comfy. And it takes the balloons forever to get down the streets. And as you might expect everyone goes to eat afterwards. But there are plenty of NYC restaurants open on Thanksgiving. And yes, they will be packed.

Did You Know Women Pay More for Health Insurance in America?

November 2nd, 2008 admin

It is no secret that health insurance in America is rather expensive. But did you know that if you are a woman that you are paying more for your health insurance than a male counterpart? How much more? Well, we are talking about hundreds of dollars more each year compared to men of the same age.

Insurance companies say that this is because women between the ages of 19 and 55 incur more healthcare costs due to childbearing. They also cite that women are more likely than men to visit doctors, get regular checkups, to take prescription medications, and to have certain chronic conditions. Of course, what is not said is the gender bias that results in conditions that affect men getting more research precedence than those that affect women. Consider for a moment that Viagra is covered under Medicare but breast reconstruction is not. Consider that migraines primarily plague women and not a lot has been done to study how to stop them. Yet, studies clearly were done that led to Viagra.

Fortunately, some members of Congress have started to question insurers’ justifications for women’s higher premiums. It is yet to be seen though if anything will be done about it or if the insurance lobbyists will bury the issue.

British women prefer accountants to James Bond-type men

November 2nd, 2008 admin

There is an article on Yahoo about an interesting poll that was released in the UK. Europe’s largest matchmaking service for singles, called PARSHIP, released its poll results on the same week as the latest Bond film “Quantum of Solace” had its royal premiere in London.

The poll surveyed 13,000 Britons. According to the poll results, British women fantasize about a glamorous James Bond-style romance, but actually prefer job security, an accountant boyfriend and marriage over an adventure romance.

The results are interesting. So, for the run down have a look at Most British girls prefer Joe Bland to James Bond.

Havens Corners Church in Blacklick, Ohio doesn’t like girls kissing girls

September 8th, 2008 admin

It seems that the Havens Corners Church in Blacklick, Ohio is a fan of Katy Perry. In fact, they used a lyric from her hit song on their church sign. The sign read “I kissed a girl and I liked it.” Just like in Perry’s song. Then they added their own line to it. The line added was “Then I went to hell.” Wow. More info on 365gay.
