Celebrating women with Madeleine Albright

March 11th, 2008 Shawna

I think that pretty much every woman knows who Madeleine Albright is. She is a former Secretary of State. And a woman that rocks!

She is also a woman that has been campaigning for Hillary Clinton. She made several stops for Hillary in Ohio and other states.

And today she has done a guest post on Hillary’s blog. You can find that post here.

What do you hope for women?

March 10th, 2008 Shawna

Do you have a hope for women? Well, regardless, there is at least someone out there that does. And they made a video PostSecret style about it. The video below was done by Antigone Magazine. And it lists out some of their hopes for women. And I could not agree more with it.

Movie observation

March 9th, 2008 Shawna

Have you ever seen a movie where the main character ended up at the DMV?

If so, what happened?

They were there a really long time right? And someone was really mean and rude to them right?

And did you notice that the movies always have women in those roles? Why do people in Hollywood think that the DMV is staffed with nothing but rude and bitchy women? At least the movies that I can recall are like that.

Why are all hotel maids women?

March 8th, 2008 Shawna

I was doing some thinking earlier about travel and hotels.

Then I had an interesting thought.

Have you ever seen a hotel maid that was male?

I bet not!

I have travelled a lot. And I can’t recall seeing one male hotel maid anyplace. And I also can’t recall ever seeing any female “bellboys” which could partly be due to the sexist name of the occupation. Actually, I think they are called “bellhops” now but still, I have never seen a female one.

Gloria Steinem ruckus from last week

March 8th, 2008 Shawna

Ah, I love Gloria Steinem.

But what feminist doesn’t? I mean, honestly?

I recently found out that she was out stumping for Hillary Clinton in Texas last week. I think that is awesome that Hillary let her do that. But apparently she made some comments that were not received well by the media. They were in reference to John McCain. Click through on the link above to read about them for yourself.

Vagina-Friendly Mayor

March 8th, 2008 Shawna

Don’t we all want a “Vagina-Friendly Mayor” ????

C’mon now, you know you do.

And if you happen to live in New Orleans, then you already do. Yes, this gem of a saying was spoken by their mayor. And honestly, I am not quite sure what to make of it.

I suppose it is a good thing, yes? I think so.

Skirts versus pants

March 7th, 2008 Shawna

You know what I hate? That a skirt is considered nice dress for women while khakis can be considered nice dress for men.

When I was 16 I worked at an IHOP. My uniform was a dress. The boys got to wear their own black pants with the uniform shirt.

I often asked why I could not wear the black pants. It made sense in a safety scenario. There was a lot of hot coffee there. And my legs were not protected from it like the boys.

So, why did I have to wear the dress?

Apparently the peeps in charge of uniforms for IHOP are sexist. Or at least they were. I have no idea what the uniform is now.

The 3/4 length sleeve conspiracy

March 7th, 2008 Shawna

You know what I love? I love long sleeve button up shirts.

You know what happens most of the time when I go shopping for one?

I can’t find one! Instead all I can find are shirts that are 3/4 length sleeve shirts!

What is that all about??

Why can’t women have a full sleeve? Or is it symbolic? You know- does it represent the amount of salary a woman gets compared to a man in the same job?

Why are most restaurant cooks men?

March 6th, 2008 Shawna

I have always wondered why most restaurant cooks are men.

I worked in several restaurants in my early working years. Men, men, men, men, men in the kitchen.

And why?

When you think of your family and you think of who makes the best food, who is it? My money is on a grandmother or a mother. Not a dad. Not an uncle. Not a grandfather.

The women are traditionally known as the better cooks yet the men get those jobs!

Is it because those jobs pay more so they don’t want women to have them?

Where is the girls’ club?

March 6th, 2008 Shawna

The boys’ club.

You always hear a lot about it, don’t you. And it got me to thinking.

Where is the girls’ club?  Or do I need to start my own? And why hasn’t anyone started one before now?

I’m just saying.
