Gloria Steinem ruckus from last week

March 8th, 2008 Shawna

Ah, I love Gloria Steinem.

But what feminist doesn’t? I mean, honestly?

I recently found out that she was out stumping for Hillary Clinton in Texas last week. I think that is awesome that Hillary let her do that. But apparently she made some comments that were not received well by the media. They were in reference to John McCain. Click through on the link above to read about them for yourself.

Vagina-Friendly Mayor

March 8th, 2008 Shawna

Don’t we all want a “Vagina-Friendly Mayor” ????

C’mon now, you know you do.

And if you happen to live in New Orleans, then you already do. Yes, this gem of a saying was spoken by their mayor. And honestly, I am not quite sure what to make of it.

I suppose it is a good thing, yes? I think so.

Skirts versus pants

March 7th, 2008 Shawna

You know what I hate? That a skirt is considered nice dress for women while khakis can be considered nice dress for men.

When I was 16 I worked at an IHOP. My uniform was a dress. The boys got to wear their own black pants with the uniform shirt.

I often asked why I could not wear the black pants. It made sense in a safety scenario. There was a lot of hot coffee there. And my legs were not protected from it like the boys.

So, why did I have to wear the dress?

Apparently the peeps in charge of uniforms for IHOP are sexist. Or at least they were. I have no idea what the uniform is now.

The 3/4 length sleeve conspiracy

March 7th, 2008 Shawna

You know what I love? I love long sleeve button up shirts.

You know what happens most of the time when I go shopping for one?

I can’t find one! Instead all I can find are shirts that are 3/4 length sleeve shirts!

What is that all about??

Why can’t women have a full sleeve? Or is it symbolic? You know- does it represent the amount of salary a woman gets compared to a man in the same job?

Why are most restaurant cooks men?

March 6th, 2008 Shawna

I have always wondered why most restaurant cooks are men.

I worked in several restaurants in my early working years. Men, men, men, men, men in the kitchen.

And why?

When you think of your family and you think of who makes the best food, who is it? My money is on a grandmother or a mother. Not a dad. Not an uncle. Not a grandfather.

The women are traditionally known as the better cooks yet the men get those jobs!

Is it because those jobs pay more so they don’t want women to have them?

Where is the girls’ club?

March 6th, 2008 Shawna

The boys’ club.

You always hear a lot about it, don’t you. And it got me to thinking.

Where is the girls’ club?  Or do I need to start my own? And why hasn’t anyone started one before now?

I’m just saying.

The women’s pocket conspiracy

March 6th, 2008 Shawna

Have you ever compared men’s jeans to women’s jeans?

I am specifically referring to the pocket size here.

It seems that men could put a whole 12-inch sub into their jeans pocket. While I on the other hand can barely keep a dime or two in mine.

What gives, fashion designers? Why can’t I have long pockets too?

I think there’s a conspiracy going on. And I don’t like it!

:)

Why are men afriad of a woman in charge?

March 3rd, 2008 Shawna

I find the response to the Hillary Clinton campaign interesting.

I think I know more than one man that will not vote for her just because she is a woman.

So, clearly those men just do not want a woman in charge.

Why are men so afraid of a woman in charge? Listen up men, it will be okay. The sun will still rise tomorrow if a woman is in charge.

Sexism: Apple doesn’t think women buy computers

March 3rd, 2008 Shawna

Have you ever gone shopping in the presence of a man and been completely ignored by the salesperson. I usually notice this sort of thing at places where the purchases at high dollar items.

That is exactly what happened to a woman in Washington that went into an Apple Store. The funny thing is that the woman was the one making a purchase, not the man.

Apparently Apple doesn’t think women buy Macs.

You can read the entire story over at The Consumerist.

Doing my own taxes

March 2nd, 2008 Shawna

I am getting ready to do my income taxes for the year.

The funny thing is that there are not a lot of women out there that do their own taxes. And there are really not a lot of women out there that do their own business taxes. And that is what I will be doing. Of course, I will be using the help of TurboTax Business 2007 to do those business taxes.

But I would rather pay for that and do them myself than pay someone else to do them.

Most of the women that I know pay someone to do their taxes. And I am talking about simple personal returns!
